The advantage of using categories and tags for your website


There is so much to learn when it comes to blogging. And sometimes, it can be very overwhelming, especially for new bloggers who don’t necessarily know what it is they need to do to get their content out there.

I remember when I first started blogging, I really had no idea what in the heck I was doing. And better yet, I really had no idea what anything even meant. All the terms, all the different features on each platform... 

But having been an avid blogger and up and coming designer, you do the research and quickly find all that information out. 

The advantage of using categories and tags

One of the main key elements when it comes to blogging on any platform is knowing the difference between categories and tags and what exactly they are used for.

They are both used to organize your content and help your visitors/customers easily find specific content on your website. So when a viewer clicks on a specific category or tag, they are able to see all of the content on your website  that is using that specific category or tag.

In Squarespace, tags and categories are used in blogs, gallery images, events, products, album tracks and project images.

So what is the difference between the two?


In general, categories are used to divide content between smaller groups of topics. Think about it like a specific item under one big agenda.  

For example, let’s use fruits and vegetables. Fruit would be your category, and under that category you would have apples, oranges, strawberries, mangos, pineapples, etc. In the vegetable category, you would find cucumbers, celery, carrots, onions, potatoes, etc.

Tip: It’s very recommended that you do not exceed the use of categories because it does tend to confuse your readers.


Tags are similar to categories, however they are a lot more specific and include a lot more detail. It’s used to describe more specifically what your blog post is about. Think more along the lines of keywords. Maybe it's a year, month, subject matter, or any other thing that your viewers may be interested in.

Tags are considered like the original ‘hashtag’. If you can see yourself saying ‘hashtag dream vacation’ or ‘hashtag boss lady’, you may want to consider using those as tags in your blog posts.

So, sticking with the previous example, let’s say our blog post was all about apples, tags for that post would be red, green, sweet, royal gala, granny smith, apple pie… You can get pretty creative with this. You want to make sure that the tags you’re using are being covered in the post your writing.

Tip: You may use tags more liberally to describe what it is you’re talking about.

Take advantage of your categories and tags.

It's important to include categories and tags to your content because it will increase visibility. This means that every time that a viewer searches for content or keywords, your website has a better chance at being found first. 

However, you want to be sure that there is not irrelevant content showing up, so make sure that you are tagging your content wisely.

I like to say the limited number of tags that can be used on a public tag listing should be anywhere between 5 to 15 tags (or categories, or a combination of the two) for each post.
